Bio

I am Debbie Ruiz and I am the Speech Therapist for the elementary school. In January, I will be starting my 27th year of teaching in this area. I have taught in other states such as Arkansas, Hawaii, Virginia, and New Jersey. As a speech pathologist, my students range from kindergarten through the 4th grade who have language and articulation difficulties.

If you have ever talked to me, you have probably noticed that I am not from here. Many people think I am from the east, but I am not. I am from the West Bank of New Orleans. In fact, I am more southern than many of you. I have lived in this area and in Millbrook for the past 27 years. My family and I were brought here by the Air Force so my husband could attend Air Command and Staff College. He was asked to stay on as an instructor for the college and then he received a command position. He has been retired for 21 years. My husband now teaches Air Force JROTC at Southside High School in Selma.

I have 3 daughters (Amber-39, Kristi-35, Reagan-21). Amber is a second grade teacher in Tuscaloosa and teaches at Tuscaloosa Academy. She graduated from Troy University with a degree in social work and AUM with a Masters in Education. Amber is married and has four children of her own: ten year old twins (Peyton and Patrick), eleven year old daughter (Libbi Cate), and fourteen year old son (Landon). Kristi is a retired licensed cosmetologist and is married. She is a mother of three children and now lives in Kansas (Zach-15, Madison-12, and Meaghan-10). Reagan, my third child, is now a senior at Troy University. She is a member of Kappa Delta sorority and is majoring in Tourism and Hospitality Management. She will be doing an internship at Walt Disney World beginning in February 2018 for 6 months and will return to Troy University to complete her degree.

In my spare time I like to cook, read books on my Kindle, garden, and work on crossword puzzles. I have two dogs: Cheyenne (Maltese) and Max (Daschund/Jack Russell). In the summer, my family likes to go camping with the dogs, go to the beach, and swim.

I hope to retire from teaching in two years and continue with my job at Maxwell Air Force Base Chapel as the religious education coordinator.
